One of the Family: Métis Culture in Nineteenth-Century Northwestern Saskatchewan is a study by Métis historian Brenda Macdougall about the importance of family in understanding the cultural history of Métis people in northwestern Saskatchewan. She studies four generations of Métis families residing in the Ile a la Crosse region using the Cree word, wahkootowin. This concept embodies a worldview that links land, family, and identity and can offer a unique methodology to understand Métis society as it deals with outside economic and spiritual institutions while maintaining a viable and vibrant society.
